Jordyn Wieber was born on July 12, 1995 to Rita and David Wieber. Just 11 years later Jordyn competed in the biggest competition of her life, the 2006 Visa National Championships. Although Jordyn was the youngest competitor at the meet her big tricks for such a tiny girl set her apart from the rest. Jordyn qualified to her first national team in 9th place and received her first international assignment...but this was only after years of hard work and dedication to the sport that she loves....
Jordyn started her gymnastics career in 1999 at age 4. In 2002 Jordyn qualified to the 2002 National TOP 7 & 8 Year Old Diamond Team. By age 7 Jordyn was competing a level 5 athlete she competed as a level 5 at the Early State Championships in 2003 winnning vault, bars, beam, floor, and all-around! In 2004 Jordyn competed as a level 6 athlete where she placed 2nd all-around at the Level 6 Michigan State Championships.
By the age of 10 Jordyn had already qualified to level 10, the highest level in the Junior Olympic program. Jordyn competed at Region 5 Championships as a level 8 athlete in 2005 where she placed 1st all-around and 1st on vault and bars. Jordyn jumped to level 10 in 2006 and competed at Level 10 Michigan Championships on Bars and Beam. Jordyn qualified to Level 10 Region 5 Championships where she placed 1st on vault and floor and 4th all-around, qualifying her to the 2006 Junior Olympic Championships in Oklahoma City, OK. Jordyn placed 2nd all-around at JO Nationals and 2nd on floor.
Jordyn qualified to the international elite level in mid 2006 where she went on to compete at the 2006 US Classic. Jordyn placed 10th all-around at the 2006 US Classic in Kansas City, and easily scored high enough to qualify her to the 2006 Visa National Championships which would be held in St. Paul, MN. Jordyn placed 9th on beam and 9th all-around in a strong field of competitor, qualifying her to her first National Team.
Jordyn started off 2007 by competing in some invitational competitions where she showed her new and upgraded skills including a double twisting yuchenko on vault and a back tuck full on beam. Jordyn went into the 2007 US Classic as one of the favorites to win the title, but a few mistakes left Jordyn in 5th place. Although Jordyn had qualified to the 2007 US Championships, she knew that she could do better.
Jordyn finished the first day of competition in 3rd place and easily repeated the feat on day two to finish with the bronze medal in the all-around. Jordyn also came away with more hardware earning the silver on vault, the bronze on bars, and the silver on beam! Jordyn has successfully qualified to her 2nd USA National Team and received an assignment to compete in the Top Gym Competition to be held in Belgium. Unfortunately the Top Gym Competition was cancelled in 2007 so Jordyn was left without an assignment. In October she attended another National Team Training camp where she was named to the 2007 Jr. Pan America team! Jordyn traveled to Guatemala where the USA won the team gold and Jordyn won the silver medal in the all around. Jordyn also earned gold medal on bars and beam and a bronze medal on floor.
In March of 2008 Jordyn was assigned to the 2008 Jesolo Grand Prix Competition in Italy. Team USA once again earned the gold medal in the team competition and Jordyn equaled that success by winning the gold medal in the individual competition. Later she was also named to the 2008 Pacific Rim Championships, but had to withdraw due to an ankle injury. Jordyn went on to compete at the 2008 US Classic where she swept the competition winning five gold medals. She went on to compete at the 2008 US Championships where she became the 2008 US Junior National Champion! Jordyn also won gold medals on vault and floor. Shortly after becoming the US Junior National Champion Jordyn traveled to Charleroi, Belgium for the 2008 Top Gym Competition. Jordyn earned the gold medal in the all around with a 59.800 and qualified to all four event finals. Jordyn earned two additional gold medals in event finals scoring a 15.27 on uneven bars and a 15.77 on balance beam. The United States also earned the gold medal as a team.
Jordyn started off 2009 by traveling to Chicago, IL for the 2009 American Cup. Although Jordyn was the youngest competitor at the American Cup she went home with the gold medal in the all around scoring a 60.200. Jordyn then traveled to Canada for the 2009 Gymnix International where she earned first place in the all around with a 58.500. Jordyn competed in the event finals the following day where she earned four additional gold medals. Jordyn sustained an injury to her hamstring shortly after the competition and was sidelined for the rest of her competitive season.
In 2010 Jordyn came back into the competitive scene by traveling to San Diego, California for the 2010 San Diego Classic where she took 1st on vault and uneven bars. She then competed in the 2010 US CoverGirl Classic earning gold medal on vault, uneven bars, and the all around. Jordyn sustained an ankle injury in warm-ups for Day one of the 2010 US National Championships in Hartford, CT and was unable to complete the competition.
Jordyn came back strong in 2011 by winning the 2011 American Cup, beating world champion Aliya Mustafina by just .068 points. Jordyn continued the year by winning both of uneven bars and balance beam at the 2011 US Classic. She then traveled to St. Paul, MN for the 2011 VISA National Championships where she placed 1st all around and earned gold medals on uneven bars and floor exercise.
After many months of healing, Jordyn came back strong at the 2011 American Cup where she earned the gold medal in the all around, beating World Champion Aliya Mustafina by just .068 points. Jordyn continued to do well and was named to the USA delegateion traveling to Jesolo, Italy for the 2011 City of Jesolo Competition. Jordyn placed 2nd on vault, beam, and the all-around at the Jesolo competition. At the US Classic Jordyn competed uneven bars and balance beam for competition experience, winning both events. She traveled to St. Paul, MN for the 2011 US National Championships where she earned the National Title and also took home gold medal on uneven bars and floor exercise. Jordyn was then named to the USA delegation travleing to Tokyo, Japan for the 2011 World Championships. The United States had a very strong showing taking home the gold medal in the team competition. Jordn qualified to all around, uneven bars, balance beam, and floor exercise event finals. She went on to become the 2011 World Champion in the all around competition! Jordyn also earned a bronze medal on balance beam. Jordyn is now back home training for the 2012 season.
As well as being a member of the 2006-2012 USA National Team, Jordyn was also a member of the 2002, 2004, & 2005 National TOP teams. Jordyn's goals include to someday become an Olympic Team member and also to compete gymnastics at the College level. Jordyn attends DeWitt High School where she will graduate from in 2013 and says that Science is her favorite subject.
